A New Head Teacher for the Cheder

We are delighted to announce that a new Head Teacher for the Cheder has been appointed and will start her duties at the beginning of the new term in September. She is Estelle Salomon and lives in Edgware, Middlesex with her husband Ronnie, who is from Israel, and their two children Adam (17) and Elinor (12).

Estelle grew up in Liverpool and after finishing her studies went to live in Israel, where she stayed for more than sixteen years. After marrying and giving birth to their first child, she moved back to England, settling in Edgware.

She taught at the Edgware United Synagogue Cheder for eleven years, and for the last four years was deputy head. Sadly the Cheder has now closed down as the number of children has diminished, although for good reasons, as many of them have taken up places in Jewish day schools. The remaining children are transferring to Stanmore Cheder, which in recent years has amalgamated with Belmont & Kenton Chadarim, and so is quite a large centre today. Estelle could have taken up a teaching position there, but she liked the challenge of coming to a newer Cheder, with the potential for bringing in larger numbers.

In her day job, she also teaches Limudei Kodesh (Jewish Studies) at the Michael Sobell Sinai School in Kenton.

Estelle hopes that as the new Head Teacher of the NWES Cheder she will inspire in the children a love of Judaism and an awareness of their Jewish heritage and identity, so that they will look forward to attending Cheder regularly.

Her hobbies include reading, gardening, swimming, doing competitions, and going on long walks.

Estelle and her family take this opportunity of wishing all members of the congregation a Shana Tova Umetuka – a Happy and Healthy New Year.
