NEW WEST END GUILD

Anne Shisler

The New West End Guild started the run up to Rosh Hashanah with a Hat and Handbag Sale. The portrait of Rev Singer (of siddur fame) looked down on the ladies trying on hats of all colours and sizes. There were even some suitable hats for the husbands who had been dragged along and they too went away with suitable headgear for Yomtov!  The Guild produced vast quantities of bridge rolls, cakes and delicacies over Succot, and helped to serve supper in the Succah for the community.

The New West End hosted a regional meeting of the Association of United Synagogue Women in November.  The evening culminated in a tour of the synagogue and Mr Henry Magrill showed some of the beautiful treasures and historical documents that the New West End has in its possession.

The Guild, together with the functions committee, arranged a highly successful evening with the Happy Puzzle Company.   More recently the Guild were persuaded to participate in the Music Hall evening put on by the shul – our three stars Debbie Talalay, Denise Lux and Jacqueline Abramson, performed the ‘Three Little Maids from Shul’ and the rest of the ladies led a sing-song after performing (!)  ‘In My Yomtov Bonnet’. Probably the less said about that the better!  We have had a guest speaker from the Greater London Assembly, Ms Angie Bray, explaining how the GLA works and in particular her views on the congestion charge.  Our Book Club is continuing successfully.  We plan to have a wine-tasting evening before Pesach.  It seems that the New West End have not acknowledged Ladies Guild Shabbat and this year a kiddush in honour of the women in the community was held in January – the men did the catering, of course.

We plan to run a wine-tasting evening before Pesach and afterwards we hope to start a keep-fit class on Tuesday evenings.

We all enjoy working together and look forward to many more successful activities.
