Our Choir

Mosaic Voices is a professional a cappella choir, dedicated to performing, preserving and commissioning new music from the Jewish tradition. It is the resident choir of one of Europe’s most beautiful synagogues, the New West End Synagogue in Bayswater, London. The choir, founded in 2012 by its musical director, Michael Etherton, had its recording of Kol Nidrei broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune programme. Its first album, The Blue Book, was released in December 2018.

“A beautiful sound”

The choir have recently released four new music videos that were written and recorded at various stages of the coronavirus lockdown, within the rules of social distancing. All the pieces were either composed or arranged by our Composer in Residence, Benjamin Till.

The most recent is the beautiful Yiddish lullaby, Rozhinkes mit Mandlen, which we were able to record and film two weeks ago, albeit one chorister at a time. The stunning New West End Synagogue is the setting for an inspiring rendition of Adon Olam ‘Over the Rainbow’, sung by Marc Joseph, together with Mosaic Voices. And there is a sparky and joyous new Yism’chu, recorded and filmed in separate vocal booths at Sonica Studios.

The earliest of the four recordings is a musical setting of Psalm 23 (The Lord is My Shepherd) composed and sung by Benjamin Till. This moving piece documents lockdown for Britain’s Jewish community, and was created following a call-out for photos of people’s experience of lockdown across the country.
